We offer a private microsuction ear wax removal service with same-day appointments. In the past, having your impacted ear wax removed via water syringing was a painful and potentially harmful process. We use microsuction, which has become very popular with both hearing care professionals and the general public over the last few years. Unlike water irrigation, the process is painless, and a quick solution to relieve the wax that is blocking your ears.
During your microsuction ear wax removal appointment, one of our highly trained Audiologists will use a powerful camera to show you the ear canal before and after the procedure. Microsuction is the safest method of ear wax removal. There is no water used so it is both comfortable and quick! The procedure is undertaken using loupe magnification, ensuring the procedure is exceptionally safe. A low powered medical suction device is used to remove wax.
Excessive ear wax

Initially, we take a look in your ear canal to view the excessive wax build-up. We will then use the microsuction device to suction the ear wax out of your canal. The process works in a similar way to a vacuum. During the procedure, you will hear the sound of the suction in your ear canal. The procedure is conducted under magnification to ensure that we can see precisely where to apply the gentle, blunt probe to remove the wax.
Microsuction ear wax removal is usually quick and often pre-treatment is not necessary. We can normally remove wax the same day you contact us. Nevertheless, the use of olive oil spray (available at the chemist) before your appointment will help condition the skin and make the procedure even quicker. If the wax is too hard and impacted then we may need to ask you to return after applying olive oil spray, to soften the wax in preparation for the procedure. At our hearing aid centre, we offer a relaxed atmosphere, allowing sufficient time with all our patients to remove wax, in a safe and gentle way. We can also offer an on-screen video image of the wax in the ear and the cleared ear after treatment.

Earwax Removal by microsuction is one of the safest possible methods. Microsuction earwax removal is also the quickest method of ear cleaning, usually lasting no longer than 15 minutes. Syringing and irrigation, using high levels of water pressure are now discredited methods for removing earwax. If you have a bad experience with syringing in the past you can be assured that microsuction is much more comfortable and safer.
Ear wax, or cerumen as it’s medically known, is usually a substance secreted by the ear canal to protect the skin inside the ear canal. Ear wax assists in self-cleaning the ear canal, providing protection from foreign bodies, bacteria & fungi. Unfortunately, hearing loss can occur when a build-up of ear-wax becomes excessive.
A feeling of blockage, itchiness or discomfort that is accompanied by hearing loss and/or tinnitus is usually due to excessive ear wax that needs to be removed professionally. Some patients who visit private ear wax removal clinics are surprised when they are informed that no significant ear wax build-up is found in their ear canal.
Other conditions, such as ear infections and ear discharge can cause the same symptoms as excessive ear wax. Our video otoscope (in-ear-camera) will be used to show images of your ear canal so we may share our findings with you. If you have a medical condition that needs to be treated then we can refer you to our in-house Consultant in Audiological Medicine to provide a diagnosis and any appropriate treatment*. The vast majority of ear wax removal centres do not have this integrated medical approach – usually, the patient needs to visit their GP to get a referral to a consultant, causing a delay, continued discomfort and added frustration for the patient.
If we find that you do not have excessive ear wax or any medical conditions affecting your ears, then you may have an underlying significant hearing loss (that you thought was wax related). We offer an inclusive hearing test scan to all our patients and we can offer audiological advice and treatments after this assessment.
*This applies to patients being seen at our London Neuro-Otology Centre. Although the Centre’s activities are fully integrated, appointments with in-house Audiological Physicians are transacted under a separate Company and not under ‘Audiological Science Ltd’.
