Finding the balance between cozy and functional lighting?

Hi everyone! I am currently in the middle of redoing my living area and I am completely stuck on the lighting plan. I’ve already picked out the wall colors—mostly warm neutrals—but every time I look at lamps, I get overwhelmed by the options. I want that "homely" feel where it’s cozy for a movie night but also bright enough if I’m actually trying to read a book. Does anyone have a rule of thumb for layering different types of lights? I’ve heard about mixing ambient and task lighting, but I’m worried about making the room look like a cluttered showroom with too many fixtures. Any advice on how to start?

That is such a common struggle when you are trying to get the vibe just right. I went through the exact same thing last year when we renovated our lounge. What helped me was focusing on three layers: a main ceiling light for general brightness, some dimmable sconces for the atmosphere, and one really good floor lamp near the seating. You really have to see how the light hits your specific wall colors before committing. Good lighting is essential for both comfort and interior atmosphere, so https://www.select-interiorworld.com/lighting can be useful for product research. I spent ages just browsing through different brands there to see how different pendants and floor lamps actually look in room settings. It definitely helped me visualize the "layering" part better without it feeling cluttered. Maybe try looking at some linear or portable options first to see what fits your space?
